Luxembourg European Annual Meeting sees a return to the EU debate

Some 75 MGI members from Europe and beyond congregated for the European Annual Meeting and for me as a first timer at the EAM it was a good opportunity to make new friends and make contacts in the wider MGI family.

The meeting kicked off with brief reports from MGI chair Andrew Grout, MGI European Co-ordinating Committee Chair Hans Hagg, various circle activity reports and MGI executive director Clive Mielville.

The rest of the morning session was taken up with two presentations on doing business in Luxembourg and after lunch there were two presentations on Executive Recruitment and staff retention which are problems that all firms face wherever they are situated.

Friday saw new member presentations from MGI Sofakis & SIA OE, the MGI firm in Greece, and CBW, the new UK firm based in London. There was also a presentation from a potential new member based in Romania.

The rest if the day’s formal session was taken up by a presentation from Hilde Blomme, who some readers will remember from Madrid. There seems to be no new developments on the EU 8th Directive and most of session was taken up on the International Accounting Standards work being carried out by the EU.

The conference finished at lunchtime and was followed by a very entertaining football match, followed by a trip to the historic castle at Vianden and formal dinner. The main core of the conference remains the networking opportunities and the venues on Thursday and Friday evening provided by Nico Hansen and his team made this possible.

Thanks to various members of the conference for welcoming a new delegate to the conference. There is much cross border work to be had especially in the area of taxation and I look forward to exploring opportunities in Luxembourg and Cyprus in the near future. I will be taking away many memories, especially of the performance of the fairy tale by various delegates on the Friday evening.
