Firms get together to talk tax
On 22 May various representatives of the UK and Ireland firms met at the London offices of the latest firm to join the MGI family, namely Carter Backer Winter (CBW). This was the third meeting of this tax-focused group and the emphasis is not only on discussing topical matters relating to taxation, but also to foster the exchange of ideas and to encourage ongoing contact outside of these meetings.
Several members of the various firms had prepared presentations and these were all well received. The subjects were as diverse as an overview of the Irish Republic tax system (Tony Kenny of Copsey Murray, Dublin), an update on the new non-domicile/residency rules for UK tax (Peter Bond of Midgley Snelling, Weybridge), a run-through of the rules affecting the transfers of UK Pension Funds overseas under the QROP regulations (James Beecher of Midgley Snelling) and some tax planning tips for Inheritance Tax based around several practical case studies of real-life circumstances (Keith Bell of Rickard Keen, Southend-on-Sea).
The opportunity was also taken to introduce a representative of a joint venture company of CBW, namely CBW Roche. This is a firm that specialises in preparing Capital Allowance claims on buildings used for business purposes. The firm comprises individuals who, in addition to being qualified Chartered Surveyors, are also qualified in tax. Saira Puffett of CBW Roche gave a most useful and informative presentation on maximising claims for relief.
In addition to the formal presentations there was plenty of time for everyone to share their views on related matters and also swap experiences of recent difficulties with HMRC, and to receive practical as well as informed technical input from colleagues who had experienced similar problems.
All in all a very worthwhile and productive day for all involved.
