First Meeting of Charities group
In early June, the newly-formed MGI-wide Third Sector Team (being those members operating in the not for profit/charities sector) held its inaugural meeting at the offices of Carter Backer Winter in London. Five firms were represented from within MGI and as the day unfolded it became apparent that, if combined, the size of client portfolios in this sector across the five firms would be sufficient to place the group comfortably within the fifteen largest firms dealing with charities and other not-for-profit organisations in the UK.
It was also notable that the client bases of the five participating firms were very diverse. Each firm gave a concise summary of its strengths within the sector, and this session alone highlighted how diverse our clients are. It soon became apparent that at least one member of the group had had some experience of each discrete area within the Third Sector. In turn, MGI firms can tender for a range of Third Sector work in the confidence that the experience to do such a job is already there within the group.
Charities and not-for-profit organisations have been encouraged to run more professionally in the last few years, and this was a point that the group echoed. In addition, the legislation that such organisations have to deal with has evolved in the last few years, is increasingly complex, and is still changing around us.
It was heartening to find that there are fellow practitioners within other MGI UK firms who face the same challenges that I do in this sector, and a lot of good contacts were forged that day. The development of this specialist group will enhance our offering in the years ahead.
