Association boost for firm one year on

At a time when many companies are looking for ways to drum up new business, a London accountancy firm has found its membership of an international association of like-minded companies a major help.

Carter Backer Winter LLP (CBW) joined the MGI association of independent accounting and consulting firms on 1 November 2008, in a bid to expand the company’s global reach and expertise, without sacrificing its independence through a takeover or merger.

MGI has a limited number of member companies in each country, meaning there are no major competition issues, but members are able to support each other and share knowledge and contacts with other firms in the UK and abroad.

There are also opportunities to exchange ideas at the regular national and international conferences, together with specialist seminars on topics as diverse as tax, accounting for charities and marketing.

CBW managing partner Peter Winter said: "In less than one year, MGI has become so much more to us than just an international ‘networking club'.

"We had under-estimated that value of even our first year's membership. In our first year we received a significant referral from another UK member and have been able to make a substantial outward referral to the USA on an international corporate recovery assignment.  All this is on top of the regular traffic of smaller jobs coming and going.

"We have also enjoyed getting involved and meeting the members who make up this worldwide association. We've already visited MGI offices in the USA, Argentina, South Africa, Israel, Australia and China, as well as attending conferences in the USA, UK and Luxembourg.

"Most importantly we've benefited from being able to promote that we can offer a truly international service to our clients and key referrers.”
