Charities Forum
Whilst the Charities Forum was the smallest gathering so far this year, with seven delegates representing six firms, it was clear that the strength of MGI in this sector was grown considerably with Milsted Langdon and Harrison, Beale and Owen joining last year.
Whilst there have not been a lot of legislative changes in this sector recently, those present got an appreciation of each firm’s skill set in this area. In particular, a number of firms have specialist teams looking after their charity clients. There was much discussion about marketing opportunities to get new clients in this niche sector. Information available from the Charity Commission can be reviewed to build up targets in each firm’s area.
However, what was most apparent is that to be credible in this sector, those responsible in each firm need to be actively involved in the sector. Some of the delegates were trustees of various charities already and have attended a lot of relevant events. As with any niche marketing, firms need to be able to demonstrate credibly their degree of specialism and not just lay claim to such skills.
The meeting was also attended by Philip Kirkpatrick and Eva Abeles of Bates Wells and Braithwaite, who are one of the leading firms of solicitors in this sector. Their input reinforced our early discussion about activity in the market and the need for specialisms. They explained that their firm had become will-known by writing articles in indeed books in their specialist sector.
