Tax forum

Most members of MGI UK and Ireland were present at the recent tax forum with more than a dozen delegates. We were also joined by representatives from MGI Verstegen in the Netherlands who presented on tax planning opportunities using companies based in the country.

This highlighted that while their corporate structures are similar to those in this country, there are some excellent tax opportunities, particularly when routing offshore income or royalties via a Dutch company.

We also had an update on Ireland’s tax position from Andrew Gelling, who represented Copsey Murray, which was well-received.

We had some interesting discussions in the group on topics such as group share restructuring, directors’ loan accounts, tax investigations and the ever-stimulating “working interests in US oil and gas wells”!

There were also a number of third-party presentations; one by ggtc on Research and Development claims, together with a presentation from Ingenious Corporate Film Partnerships, which looked at investment and tax planning opportunities relating to the film industry.

Out of all of our gatherings, the tax forum appears to create significant commercial opportunities for firms. Another benefit is that we learn more about each other’s tax skills and the specialist services that exist across the members. There are still outstanding opportunities for members to market their skills to one another, and I hope they will continue to do so.
