CBW hits heights in fundraising marathon
CBW team members have put social responsibility into action by raising £30,000 for charity with a gruelling trek up and down the UK’s three tallest mountains in 24 hours.
Staff chose to support COSMIC (Children of St Mary's Intensive Care unit in Paddington, London) as the charity to benefit after Paul Smethhurst, head of CBW’s Forensic team, convinced the firm’s Project
Fortius leader group to take on the Three Peaks Challenge.
The challenge involves scaling Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales and covering the equivalent of a marathon on foot plus 800 miles by road, driving between the three locations.
A 15-strong team from CBW – nine walkers and a support crew of six – were involved in the challenge in June, which included a tension-filled incident on Scafell Pike where torrential rain and very poor visibility led to two walkers being separated from the main party. With no phone reception, it was four hours before they were located, unharmed. The delay put a dent into an already tight schedule that meant that rather than climbing Snowdon in the dark, the team squeezed in a few hours’ sleep, getting up at 5.30am the following morning to complete the last climb. Paul said: “We’re incredibly proud of our ability to achieve such an extraordinary challenge and that includes our brilliant support team, who had less sleep than the walkers but still worked around the clock to keep everyone fed, watered, transported and, as much as possible, comfortable.
“We are delighted to have raised so much money for COSMIC, which each year treats 500 desperately sick children. Members of our team were invited on a ward visit at St Mary’s and it was eye-opening, and a privilege, to see the work being done by COSMIC for the children and their families and the enthusiasm with which this was done. We feel very proud to be supporting such a worthy cause.”
